Gym Diary: A Small Hair Dryer, a Smoother Day

Gym Diary: A Small Hair Dryer, a Smoother Day

6:40 AM | Leaving a Little Room in My Gym Bag

The alarm goes off for the second time before I finally open the curtains. Today's plan is simple: the gym, then work, then dinner with a friend.

I pack my usual things: trainers, fresh clothes, a water bottle, and toiletries. I used to assume a quick shower was all I needed before heading out. Then I would find myself in front of the changing-room mirror with wet hair and very little time left.

Now, I leave a spot for a portable hair dryer. To me, portability means something practical: it fits in the bag I already carry, with enough room to zip it shut comfortably. When choosing one, I consider both its size and weight. If it folds, I check whether its folded shape actually works with the space in my bag.

An appliance has a much better chance of becoming part of my routine when bringing it along feels easy.

8:00 AM | A Moment Between Training and Everything Else

It's leg day. After the last set, I sit on the bench for a moment before heading to the changing room. There's another entry in my training log, but what I'm looking forward to now is a shower and a clean change of clothes.

After towelling off the excess moisture from my hair, I take my dryer to a dry grooming area where the gym permits personal electrical appliances. The familiar controls and grip make this part of getting ready feel straightforward.

Sometimes the shared dryers are all in use. With my own, I have another option when a suitable socket and an appropriate space are available. I don't have to plan entirely around when the communal equipment becomes free.

I'm not aiming for a full salon-style finish. Dry hair, a tidy fringe, and a quick run of my fingers through the ends are enough. For me, the value of a portable hair dryer is making that potentially rushed moment after a shower feel familiar and manageable.

8:25 AM | Fresh Clothes, a Different Pace

I fasten the last button on my shirt and look in the mirror. Now my morning workout really feels complete.

I haven't brought a dryer because I expect every gym visit to look like a lifestyle photograph. I have a train to catch, an office to get to, and people to meet. I'd simply like to feel ready when I leave, without thinking about my unfinished hair routine on the way.

Once the dryer has cooled, I put it in a dry pouch, separate from my damp towel. The bag is zipped, and I'm ready for the next part of the day.

It's a modest convenience, but one that fits naturally into an ordinary morning: train, shower, get ready, and go.

12:30 PM | Remembering the Workouts I Almost Skipped

Looking at my calendar after lunch, I realise that the difficult part of a morning workout isn't always the session itself. Sometimes it's everything around it: what to pack, where to shower, and how to get from the gym to work without a scramble.

A portable hair dryer won't do my workout for me. It simply makes one small part of the routine easier to organise. For someone heading straight from training to class, the office, or a social plan, having a familiar grooming tool within reach can be useful.

I'm also learning not to fill my gym bag with everything that might possibly come in handy. The things that earn their place are the ones I use regularly, can pack easily, and don't find a nuisance to carry.

8:30 PM | Making Room for an Active Weekend

While laying out tomorrow's clothes, I start thinking about the weekend: a group fitness class, followed by a slow coffee somewhere nearby. If I plan to train during a short trip, the same dryer can move into my travel bag and keep one part of my routine familiar.

Portable doesn't mean usable everywhere, of course. I check whether the venue allows personal appliances and has a suitable socket. For travel, I also check the dryer's rated voltage against the local electricity supply. Folding handles, heat settings, and other features depend on the model; the word “portable” alone doesn't tell me what is included.

Packing for exercise has become a way of planning the time after it, too. A little space for the dryer and a little time for myself help the transition into the rest of the day feel less hurried.

A Note Before Bed | Looking After the Person Leaving the Gym

I didn't set an impressive new record today. I trained as planned, showered, dried my hair, arrived at work on time, and met my friend for dinner.

That's the kind of fitness routine I enjoy: one with room for exercise, work, friendship, and rest.

If I could attach a note to the portable hair dryer in my gym bag, it would say: A small thing that helps me leave the gym ready for the rest of my day.
